Right now, there are three Orthodox churches in Hawaii:
- Saints Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Cathedral of the Pacific (Honolulu),
- Holy Theotokos of Iveron Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia (Honolulu), and
- Saint Juvenaly Mission – Orthodox Church in America (Kailua-Kona – Big Island).
We can be grateful for the immigrants who brought Orthodoxy to America and to Hawaii. They represent the first wave of Orthodoxy. What is needed is a second wave of locals, born-and-raised in Hawaii, who will bring the spiritual treasures of Ancient Christianity to their friends and family.
The tradition of Orthodox missions has been to accept and redeem the best of the culture they have entered. Orthodoxy is not a foreign religion, but one that seeks to makes its home all over the world. It is a catholic religion in the best sense of the word. Local Orthodoxy is genuine Orthodoxy.
